Love-Proof!
Children's sermon
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (vv. 21-22)
Object: A paper sack. Blow it up with air and twist the top closed so it looks like there is something in the sack. Carry and hold it like it is rather heavy.

Hello, everyone! (Let them respond.) Are you ready for our story today? (Let them respond.) Great, let’s go.
But before I tell the story, I have a question for you. Have you ever wondered if God really loves you? Have you ever felt that way? (Let them respond.) I sure have. I think we all do sometimes. Maybe we’re just having a bad day. Or maybe something happens to us that is really sad. When that happens, we sometimes wonder if God really loves us. And when we feel that way, it would be really nice to see or hear something to prove to us that God really loves us, wouldn’t it? (Let them respond.) Well, what if I told you that inside this sack (show the sack) I have something that proves that God loves us? Right inside this sack! (Let them respond.)
Now let me tell you the story about the day that Jesus was baptized. Does anyone remember who baptized Jesus? (Let them respond.) His name was John, and he baptized a lot of people and told them they needed to get ready because God was about to send someone very special to help them. John would baptize them, and then they would say a prayer to ask God to be with them. People came from all over the country so there was usually a long line of people waiting to be baptized.
One day, Jesus got in the line to be baptized. John baptized him like everyone else. Then Jesus said a little prayer, just like everyone else. But then something happened that didn’t happen to everyone else. Does anyone know what happened? (Let them respond.) After Jesus said his prayer, everyone saw a dove fly down from a tree and land on Jesus. Everyone was surprised and wondered what it meant, but then something even bigger happened. Does anyone know what it was? (Let them respond.) While everyone was looking at the dove, a loud voice came from the sky and said, “You are my son, whom I love; with you, I am well pleased.”
I’ll bet that really surprised everyone, don’t you? (Let them respond.) They heard the voice say that Jesus was God’s son and that God loved him. That’s when they all knew that Jesus must be the person John had been telling them God was going to send to help them all.
You know, sometimes I think it would be really great if a dove would fly down and land on my shoulder, and God’s voice would boom out at me and tell me that God loves me. Sometimes it would be great to have that kind of proof that God loves us, wouldn’t it? (Let them respond.)
How do we know for sure that God loves us? (Let them respond.) What proof do I have that God loves me? Remember I said I had something in this sack that proved God loves us? (Let them respond.) Well, I was just kidding. (Pop or crush the bag.) If I want to know that God loves me, I don’t need something from a sack, I don’t need a dove, and I don’t need a loud voice from the sky. Do you know how I know that God loves me? (Let them respond.) Because God sent Jesus to help us. He sent his own son to help us. And Jesus told us that God loves every one of us. We are all God’s children. Every one of us. And if Jesus said that, well, I think we can believe it, don’t you? (Let them respond.)
I hope you will remember how much God loves you, and how much God wants us to love other people and do as much as we can to help take care of those other people and make sure they know how much we love them.
Let’s have our prayer and ask God to help us remember to do the things God wants us to do to take care of each other.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for reminding us how much you love us. Please help us remember that you love all of the people you have created and help us let the people around us know that we love them just like Jesus loves us. Amen.
