Living Word
Children's sermon
Object:
A letter and a telephone
If I got a letter from my parents telling me they loved me, that would be nice, but it wouldn't be enough for me. I would want more than just words on a piece of paper. A telephone call from them would be nice as well. Then I would have a good idea that they love me. But that would still not be enough. I would want more. Would you want more than letters or phone calls from your parents telling you they love you? (Let them answer.) Sure you would! You might want them to hug you and kiss you. You might want them to speak to you often and be interested in your life. You might want them to spend time with you. In other words, you want more than words from your parents; you want action!
As God's people, we also want words, but we want more. We want action. We want God to do more than tell us; we want God to do something. And God did do something. God made the Word a living Word ---- Jesus!
Jesus is proof of God's love for us. We have the Bible and it tells us all about God and the things God did in the days of the prophets. We have sermons and hymns that tell us about God. We have churches and Sunday schools and Christmas programs to tell us about God. But we need more. We need action for us to know for sure. We need a living Word. We need Jesus! Jesus is proof of God's love.
Christmas is about God's loving us so much that God sent a living Word. Without this living Word there would be no Christmas and we would not know for sure about God's love for us. I'm glad we have Jesus ---- God's living Word.
Dearest Lord God: Thank you for your many words of love, but mostly, thank you for Jesus. Amen.
