Living water
Children's sermon
Object:
a canteen
Good morning! How many of you have gone on a long hike in
the mountains or the desert? If you do go on a hike, you will
need one of these. (Show the canteen.) We fill this canteen with
water because you can get thirsty when you're walking. Of course
the canteen is not too big and it will soon be empty if you drink
very much. So what can we do to make sure we always have water?
(Let them answer.) Yes, we have to keep filling it up. Sometimes
we can fill it in a stream or maybe there will be a water tap in
a campground along the way. If we don't fill it up, what will
happen? (Let them answer.) That's right. We will run out of water
and have nothing to drink.
Jesus once asked a woman at a well if she would give him a
drink of water. He had been hiking a long way and he was thirsty.
She was a Samaritan woman and the Samaritans didn't usually talk
to Jews like Jesus, so the woman was surprised that Jesus would
ask her for a drink. Jesus told this woman that he could give her
"living water" that would quench her thirst forever. If she had
this "living water" she would never again be thirsty. Now,
obviously Jesus wasn't talking about regular water. What do you
think he meant? (Let them answer.)
He was talking about spiritual water that quenches the
thirst of the spirit. He was talking about FAITH! If we have
faith in God and His Son, Jesus, we will never again be
spiritually thirsty. Do all of you have this "living water" of
faith? (Let them answer.) If you believe in Jesus and know that
he died on the cross to pay for your sins, you do have faith. You
have "living water." Your spiritual canteen will never be empty.
Let's thank God for giving us this living water.
Dear Father in Heaven: Thank You for giving us the living water
of faith so that our spirit will never be thirsty. Amen.
