Light
Children's sermon
Object:
an old-fashioned lantern
"And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever." (v. 22:5)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today I brought something special with me. Have you ever seen one of these? (show lantern) Can anyone tell me what this is? (allow answers) This is a lantern. Before there was electricity, people would carry lanterns as their source of light. When they had to go outside at night, or when they had to go into a dark room, they would light a candle and put it in their lantern. They would carry the lantern with them so they had light. What do we use today when we need light? (allow answers) That's right! Usually we use flashlights. Sometimes we might use electric lanterns. In a room, we have light bulbs and lamps to give us light.
We like to have light. Have you ever been afraid of the dark? (allow answers) Lots of people are afraid of the dark! Why are you afraid of the dark? (allow answers) Usually we are afraid because we can't see. We like to be able to see the things that are around us, because we sure don't like surprises!
Even though we try to keep the darkness away, sometimes we can't keep things lit up. When the electricity goes out, we have to use candles or battery-powered lights -- and despite those little lights, nighttime seems darker without electric power. Have you ever gone camping? (allow answers) When you turn off the flashlight, it sure is dark outside! It's darker than it is in town. That kind of darkness can sure be scary!
We worry about being in darkness. Our Bible verse tells us that we don't have to! Jesus is our light. Our verse says that in heaven: "there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light…"
Aren't those good words to hear? Even though the dark is frightening, we have God on our side. God will be our light! With God as our light, we don't have to be afraid. As the verse says, God is a brighter, better light than a lamp or the sun. In Jesus' time, a lamp was kind of like a lantern. When the oil of the lamp -- like the candle in a lantern -- ran out, the light went out, too. And the sun goes down at the end of the day. God will last longer than the lamp or the light of the sun. He will shine all the time, and will never go out! Thanks to God, darkness gives us nothing to fear. Amen.
