Let it rain
Children's sermon
Object:

The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. (v. 7b)
Good morning, boys and girls. Is there anyone here who likes rainy days? (let them answer) Why don't you like rainy days? (let them answer) I understand; you can't go out on rainy days and play. Do you ever go out in a raincoat and boots and walk through the puddles? (let them answer) Do you ever just turn your face up to the heavens and taste the water drops that are falling to earth? Sometimes the rain is good, and while it gets in our way sometimes, it is very important.
Do you think the farmers like rain? (let them answer) I brought with me something that every farmer has in his yard. Sometimes he may have more than one if he has a large farm or farms in different places. Does anyone know what this is? (let them answer) It is a rain gauge and it measures the amount of water that comes with each rain. Sometimes there is less than an inch and sometimes there is more than two inches. Each crop is different and requires a different amount of rain.
Most farmers like rain as long as there is not too much rain or too little rain. Farmers know that they need early rains after they have planted their crops. After the crops are planted, they like a little rain now and then, but they always need the rains in late August and September for good crops.
If you are a farmer, you must be a very patient person. You can't do a rain dance every night when the ground gets a little dry. You learn to wait and let the weather be what God needs it to be. You will not have the perfect crop every year because there is not enough rain or there is too much rain. But you are patient and thank God for the weather that he gives you.
The Bible teaches us that patience is good for all of us. Patience is not just for farmers, but also for everyone. There is a plan that God brings to us and we must be patient to learn to live our lives with patience. So the next time it rains and you can't go outside and play, give thanks to God for the rain and be happy for the farmers who wait patiently for God to give them the right kind of weather. Amen.
