Lean on Jesus for Eternal Life
Children's sermon
Object:
a walking cane
The Point: Lean upon Jesus for he alone can give eternal life
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys. Thank you for joining me in this time of sharing Jesus. Today I brought with me a cane (show cane). When you have a knee or leg injury, it might be difficult to walk. A cane could be very important to you. By leaning on a cane, like this one, you can take your weight off your leg helping you to walk. Sometimes when you are older you are not as stable in your walking. A cane will help to give you some stability, and you are able to walk more safely. A cane can be the difference between walking safely and not walking at all.
I think that Jesus was talking about a cane in our reading from the Bible today. Not a cane like this one but a support that we need to be able to have eternal life.
A man ran up to Jesus and wanted to know how to receive eternal life. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments. The man replies he has. Then Jesus tells him to do one other thing. To give all he has to the poor and follow him. Jesus is saying that the man needs to lean not on the commandments or his wealth but upon him for eternal life. There is no other way to receive eternal life than through a faith in Jesus. We can never be good enough or wealthy enough to make it to heaven. Only by trusting, leaning on Jesus can we make it.
Jesus said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." Lean on Jesus in your walk in life, and what is impossible for you will be possible with him, eternal life.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, like the man who came to you to discover how to have eternal life, we come to you. Help us to trust not in our own goodness or in the things of this world but always in you alone. Jesus be our cane, our support, in walk to eternal life. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
