Knowing God forever
Children's Activity
Object:
It is difficult for children to know someone they have never seen. My children have a hard time feeling close to the aunts and uncles they have never met. Once they've met them, though, it's easy for them to think of them. They have a face to remember and characteristics they've experienced for themselves. This same principle is true for most of us when we consider who God is. How can we feel close to someone we've never seen? How can we know what he is really like?
During the next few days, have a conversation with your children about who God is. It would be much easier if we had a clear picture of him with which to work, but we don't. So, what do you think God looks like? Consider having each person draw a picture of God and then discussing them. Why were certain colors chosen or not chosen? Why were certain images chosen? How does the picture make the artist feel about God?
Each of us has a different idea of what God looks like. Some people have a very distinct impression of his likeness, while others have a hard time seeing anything at all. In some ways, God's actual likeness is a mix of all our notions -- and many more. When people share who they believe God is they benefit from one another's ideas. We are all on a journey to know God better, and we have been given the promise of eternal relationship with him. As we grow towards that time, our sharing with one another helps us know him better.
