"Jesus answered him, 'Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.' " (v. 23)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Who can tell me what this is? (allow answers) This is a special crystal that will make rainbows appear if you shine light through it correctly. It is called a prism. How many of you have seen a rainbow from a prism before? How about rainbows in the sky? (allow answers) When do you see rainbows? (allow answers) Usually after it rains, when the sun starts to come out. Rainbows can be very big and bright, or very small and hard to see. Whatever size or brightness, rainbows are always beautiful!
How many of you know the Bible story that has a rainbow? (allow answers) The story of Noah's ark has a rainbow! In the story of Noah's ark, God decides to flood the world so that he can start over. People were too wicked and cruel to one another for God to stand it! So God flooded the earth, but first he told a man named Noah to build an ark. An ark is a giant boat! Noah and his sons built the ark and put some of every kind of animal on it. When God flooded the world, Noah and his family and all the animals were safe on board. When the water went back down, God promised Noah that the earth would never be completely flooded like that again. This is where the rainbow comes in. God put a rainbow in the sky to remind Noah and all of us of God's promise never to flood the earth again. And God has kept his word!
The rainbow after the flood was a symbol of God's covenant. Do you know what a covenant is? (allow answers) It is an agreement between two people or groups of people. God's covenant is never to flood the earth again.
We make covenants every day, little ones to big ones. A little covenant might be when you tell your mom you will set the table. A big covenant might be between your dad and the car dealer: your dad will buy a new car. Big covenants are written down and signed by the people involved, so that nobody forgets the details of the agreement.
When you make a covenant and do what you say, it is called keeping your word. If you say you will set the table and you do it, then you have kept your word. We should keep our word as often as possible!
Our Bible verse is about keeping our word. Jesus says, "Those who love me will keep my word." When we are followers of Jesus, we must tell the truth to others and follow through when we tell them that we will do something. When we keep our word, we show good character and show that we want to do the right thing. Amen.
