Keep away
Children's sermon
Object:
a cactus
Good morning, boys and girls. How many things can you think of that are
prickly? (Let them respond.) There are porcupines and rosebushes and
whole pineapples and briar bushes and barbed wire fences. I brought
something else today that is not to be touched. It's a cactus plant. There
are lots of kinds of cactus plants, more than 2,000 different kinds. They
all look very different. What can you tell me about how a cactus plant
looks? (Let them respond.) Some cactus plants are very small and are used
in people's houses as house plants. Some are very large and are found in
the dry deserts. Do cactus plants have leaves? (Let them respond.) No, they
don't have the same kinds of leaves we see on other types of flowers or
trees. The leaves on the cactus plant are the sharp pokey things that we
don't want to touch. Why do you think the cactus is so prickly? (Let them
respond.) It's for protection so animals won't eat them and people won't
destroy them. Those prickly spines keep everything away from the cactus
plant. Do cactus plants have flowers? (Let them respond.) Many of them do.
The flowers bloom right out of the end of the prickly part. Some of the
flowers are very beautiful. If you didn't know a cactus had flowers you
might see it one morning and be very surprised to see a little flower at
the tip of each prickly part.
Our verse today talks about something that cannot be touched. We know a cactus plant cannot be touched without hurting your fingers and hands. In Moses' time there was a story about a mountain that couldn't be touched. People heard stories about the mountain and they were afraid. But the verse really means that Jesus or God is different than the stories of the mountain. The verse says that Jesus or God cannot be touched with our hands, but with our minds and hearts. It means we shouldn't be afraid of God. Some people thought that we were supposed to be afraid of God. This lesson says that God is not like the pokey part of the cactus but like the beautiful flower on the cactus plant. We aren't supposed to be afraid of God, but we are supposed to love God.
