Jesus, the bread of life
Children's sermon
Object:
an empty pizza delivery box
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to eat
pizza? (Hold up the box and let them answer.) When you eat pizza
what do you like to put on it? (Let them answer.) I like pizza. I
like it so much I could eat it for lunch and supper and for a
late night snack. Do any of you like it that much? (Let them
answer.)
I brought this box with me this morning because it reminds me of this morning's lesson. In the lesson Jesus says that he is the bread of life. Whoever comes to him will never be hungry. Pizza dough is made from wheat, just like bread is. That's why this pizza box reminds me of our lesson.
I want to tell you a story about someone -- it could be you or me -- who went with his family to eat pizza in a pizza shop. The family ordered the pizza and ate it. The little boy, about your age, loved pizza so much he told his parents, "I could eat this all the time. I'm always hungry for pizza." Then he thought to himself, I wonder if I could ever eat enough pizza? On Sunday he went to Sunday school. His teacher read the class a story about Jesus. In the story Jesus told people that he was the bread of life. Jesus told people, "Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." The boy heard this and thought about the pizza again. The boy thought to himself that Jesus is like pizza, only in a different way.
I want you to remember that Jesus tells us that the word of God is like food. It's the best food. It can grow in your heart. The word of God comes as a gift from God. We all receive it when we have faith in God. When we have faith in God we are fed by God's love and truth and joy and peace.
The next time you enjoy some pizza remember some other very important food. It's a different kind of food. It's Jesus, the bread of life.
