Jesus' body
Children's sermon
Object:
an anatomy or skeletal chart, a Bible
And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all
things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (vv.
22-23)
Good morning, boys and girls! Today we're going to talk about the body. First, let's go over some basic parts. Where are your eyes? (have children point to each) Your ears? Your nose? Your toes? Okay, most of you probably learned where those things are when you were little toddlers. How many of you have baby brothers or sisters or baby cousins? (have them raise their hands) Do you play that game with them and ask them where their nose is or where their fingers are? When we're little, the parts of our body are one of the first things our parents help us learn. Our bodies are important. We have them our whole lives! Some people decide to be doctors when they get older. Then they have to learn even more parts of the body! (hold up chart) People who want to be doctors have to learn all the different bones in the human body. Wow! They also have to learn how the body works so that they can diagnose problems or illnesses.
One of the verses from our scripture today says that Jesus is the head of the church, and the church is his body. How many of you have heard people say that before? (allow answers) Just like in our bodies, the church is made up of different parts. In our bodies, we have stomachs that let us digest food. We have fingers that let us play the piano or write a letter. We have feet that let us run. What else do we have? (allow answers) In the church, we have people who do different jobs, too. We have people who sew quilts for people who have no blankets. We have people who sing in the choir to praise God. We have people who teach Sunday school or Bible school to help everyone learn about God. What else do people do for the church? (allow answers) Those are good answers. We also have people who mow the church's grass, clean the inside of the church, and people who play music for the church. What can you do for the church? (allow answers) Good answers! God wants us all to share our special gifts with the church and wants us all to remember that Jesus is the "head" of the church. What makes your head special? (allow answers) What's in your head? (allow answers) Your brain is in your head! What does your brain do? (allow answers) That's right: It tells the rest of your body what to do! Since Jesus is the head of the church and we are just the body, we have to listen to what Jesus wants us to do. (hold up Bible) The Bible is like our medical textbook for the body of the church. Just like doctors have to study how the body works, so we all have to study how Jesus wants his body to work. Amen.
