It's good to be here
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of the transfiguration event and a Bible
Good morning! Once, Jesus went up on a high mountain and he
took Peter, James, and John with him. On that mountain, he was
transfigured, that is, he appeared to get very bright and he was
so perfect that it was hard to look at him. Moses and Elijah
appeared there with him and they talked together. Here is a
picture that shows an artist's idea of what that might have
looked like. (Show the picture.)
One of the things that Peter said was, "Lord, it is good for
us to be here." I can understand why he would say that. Wouldn't
you like to be there and see Jesus that way and see Moses and
Elijah? (Let them answer.)
We weren't there, of course, and we aren't going to see
Jesus that way, or Moses or Elijah, until we get to Heaven. But
there is a way for us to see Jesus and Moses and Elijah right
here and now. Does anyone know how we can do that? (Let them
answer.) Well, I'll tell you. Here is where we can find Jesus,
and Moses, and Elijah. (Hold up the Bible.) When we read the
Bible, they can speak to us. When we come to church and hear a
sermon, we are hearing the words of these prophets and of Jesus.
When we go to Sunday school, we are hearing all about Jesus and
getting to know him better.
So, while we weren't there for the transfiguration, we can
see Jesus in our Bible and right here in church, and we can then
say the same thing Peter said. We can say, "It is good for us to
be here!"
Dear Jesus: It is good for us to be here in church where we can
learn all about you. Thank you for making us your children and
giving us the Bible where we can hear you speak to us. Amen.
