Inheritance
Children's sermon
Object:
something you inherited
I have with me something that belonged in my family a long
time ago. The person who owned this at first died a long time
ago. Now I own it. I inherited it. I got it free because I belong
to that family.
You and I belong to God's family. Jesus is related to you and me. When Jesus died, he left us a wonderful inheritance -- a gift we cannot buy and cannot earn. It is a gift that comes just because we are related to Jesus. Do any of you know what gift I have in mind? (Let them answer.) I am speaking about the gift of eternal life in heaven. It is yours right now. It is mine right now. We inherited it from Jesus.
Today is All Saints' Day. This is a day we set aside to remember people who have died and who also inherited the gift we have inherited -- eternal life. They are in heaven right now because they received the inheritance we have received from Jesus. I am so thankful for what you and I have inherited. No amount of money could ever have bought the gift of eternal life.
Dear God: Thank you for our inheritance of eternal life. Amen.
