How many know him?
Children's sermon
Object:
A telephone book
Good morning! What are we celebrating today? (Let them
answer.) Yes, this is Christmas Day. What happened on the first
Christmas a long time ago? (Let them answer.) Yes, that's right.
Jesus was born. I'm glad you know that and you know why you are
in church on a Saturday morning.
Now what do I have here in my hand? (Show the telephone
book, and let them answer.) Yes, this is the telephone book for
this city. There are a lot of names in here. Is your family in
here? (Let them answer, and look up one or two families.) Now, we
know that your family knows what this day is all about, but how
about the rest of the families in this book? How many of these
families don't know much about Jesus? How many of these families
are celebrating Christmas today without going to church or
honoring Jesus in any way? (Let them answer.) Well, we don't
really know, but I do know that it is a lot of them. (You may be
able to say most of them in some cities.)
Do you think it's important that these people find out about
Jesus and become Christians? (Let them answer.) I think it is
very important. If they don't believe in Jesus, they won't go to
Heaven! What do you think we ought to do about it? (Let them
answer.) Those are good ideas and I hope we can all try hard to
see that these people learn about Jesus. There is something we
can do right now. We can pray for them.
Dear Jesus: On this Christmas Day, we are here in church to
celebrate your birth, but we know there are lots of other people
in this city who don't know you. We ask today that somehow these
people hear about you and come to love you as we do. Amen.
