Object:
your hands
For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you
through the laying on of my hands. (v. 6)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about my hands. I want you to take a very close look at my hands and see if they look very different from your hands. (let them look closely at both sides of your hands and fingers) Do you see anything different? (let them answer) They are bigger than your hands but they look pretty much the same, don't you think? (let them answer)
Have you ever noticed me using my hands with you? (let them answer) I have shaken your hand with my hand. I have given you things using my hands but I am talking about a special use of my hands. Have you ever felt my hands on your head in a special way? (let them answer) Maybe some of you will remember when you have received a blessing during communion or during some special prayer. Does anyone remember when I placed my hands on your head like this (demonstrate) and said a blessing? (let them answer)
I didn't think of this by myself. For many years, even before the time of Jesus, priests have been laying their hands upon the heads of people who believed in God. When you were baptized, a pastor said a prayer and laid his hands on your head. The same thing will be true when you are confirmed and when you are married. The Bible teaches us that the Spirit of God will connect with you when a pastor's hands are placed on your head. The power comes from God's Spirit and not the pastor's hands. God asks that pastors do this when they are saying a special blessing.
Many people go to healing services because of some illness that they have and they want to be cured. A part of the healing service is when the pastor places his hands on the person's head and prays a blessing.
Paul wrote a letter to his friend, Timothy. Timothy was having problems with his faith and Paul reminded him about the time many years ago he had placed his hands on Timothy's head. Paul said that Timothy should remember this blessing, have great courage, and not be afraid of anything. The Spirit of God was with Timothy then and the Spirit is with him still.
Remember the next time I place my hands on your head and say a prayer for the help of the Holy Spirit that I am connecting you with God through the Holy Spirit. It brings you great power and courage to be a Christian. Amen.
