The Greatest Commandment Of All
Children's sermon

“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”
Good morning girls and boys,
Did you know that you make me happy whenever you join me here? (children answer) When I get to share a children's message with you I'm especially happy to see you. I hope you are happy too, to be here. Now let's listen to a message from God.
I have here a photo of a beautiful bird in flight. Anybody know what this bird is? (children answer) You're right. It's an eagle. In just a moment we'll talk about this majestic, beautiful bird – but first a big, big question from the Bible.
One day, the Pharisees who did not like Jesus, tested him with a large question.
This test was like a trick question. Its purpose was to trap Jesus into saying something wrong.
“Teacher,” they said innocently, “which commandment in the law is the greatest?”
These religious leaders, the Pharisees, of course knew the Ten Commandments.
They also knew and taught about 613 additional commandments. “Which is the greatest commandment Jesus? Of the Ten or of the 613?” Which? Which is it?
Jesus, knowing this question was a devious trick, cleverly and truthfully answers, “the greatest commandment in all the world is this: Love your God and love your neighbor.”
(Show eagle) So love to God and love to neighbor is like this eagle in flight.
Children, how many wings does an eagle need to fly? (children answer -- two)
So it is. The greatest commandment of all flies on two wings – love to God and love to neighbor. Isn't that beautiful?
We can love because God first loved us. God gave his life in Jesus Christ, so now we get to say thank you. We show our love in worship, when we pray, when we help others in need.
Prayer: Oh my Jesus, your answer was beautiful. The greatest commandment of all is to love you and to love our neighbor with all our heart, our mind and our soul. Amen.
