God's word
Children's sermon
Object:
a rain gauge
So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give
you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or
contradict. (vv. 14-15)
Good morning, boys and girls. I have something in my hand that is very important to some people. Do you know what this is? (let them answer) That's right, it is a rain gauge, and it is important to a lot of people. Who do you think considers it very important? (let them answer) Did I hear someone say farmers? If you said farmers, then you are right. Other people use rain gauges, also.
This rain gauge tells you how much rain you received in a day or a week. Some people add up all of the inches of rain that they received in a month. That doesn't mean it is enough rain or too much rain; it just tells you how much you received. It doesn't stop the rain or make it rain harder. It just tells you how much rain there was in your area. There isn't anything we can do about the rain. We can't make it go away or get it here any faster. God sends the rain when he wants to send it. Some people think they can make it rain. I have seen people do rain dances and other people scream and holler at the top of their voices, but the rain only comes when God sends it.
Jesus told people that God would send them the right words when they needed them. Sometimes people want Christians to prove that there is a God or prove that God answers prayers. People can get very mean about us being Christians and even take us to court and accuse us of being troublemakers. You might think it is a good idea to write down some things to say when people are trying to embarrass you or make you feel bad. If you had some words ready for them when they were acting this way, maybe you could change their minds. But Jesus says, "Forget it." When the time comes and you feel under pressure, you can be sure that God will be there and he will give you the words to say. Those will be the right words. God will fill you up at the right time just like God fills up the rain gauges. It is his word.
God isn't going to send orange juice to make the corn and wheat grow. God isn't going to fill up the rain gauges with coffee. God is going to fill the rain gauges with rainwater. When you need the right words to speak to people that are trying to confuse you and make fun of you, just take a deep breath and wait for the words of God to come and fill you. Your mouth will start to move and the words of God will come out. Those people will not know what to say. They will listen to the words and say no more. When God speaks through you, others will listen. Amen.
