God's valentine
Children's sermon
Object:
a cross and a valentine
Today is September 14. There is a holiday on the fourteenth
of a certain month. Can anybody tell me what holiday I am
thinking about? (Let them answer. If no one comes up with an
answer say, "Let me give you a hint." Then show them your
valentine.) I have in mind Valentine's Day -- February 14. It
is a day set aside to show the people we love just how much we
love them. We give each other valentine cards that say mushy
things about how we love them and how they are the most wonderful
people in the world. Valentine's Day was a long seven months
ago, but today we have another kind of valentine's day.
As I think about how much we love other people and other people love us, I can't help but think about how much God loves us. God loves you and God loves me. Do you think God would ever send a valentine to us? (Let them answer.) God did send a valentine and here it is. (Show them the cross.) The cross is a sign of just how much God loves you and me. That is why we call this "Holy Cross Day." We could almost call today "God's Valentine's Day." It's like our February Valentine's Day only more important.
When people wear crosses as necklaces or earrings, they show how much they appreciate God's love for them. (If you have a cross on, show the children and say, "I show God's love for the world too by wearing this cross.") One of the most famous verses in the Bible is the one we read on God's Valentine's Day: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
Many people learn this verse by memory so that they can remember God's love. Likewise many people wear crosses so that they can remember God's love for them. When Jesus suffered and died on the cross, he proved God's love. The cross is very much like God's valentine to you and to me.
Dear Jesus: Thank you for dying for us so that we can have eternal life. Amen.
