God of the living
Children's sermon
Object:
a doll
Many people believe that you should be able to see God.
Therefore they make objects they can believe are really God.
Let's pretend that this doll is a god. It would be silly to pray
to this doll, wouldn't it? How silly it would be for me to give
this doll my whole life. This doll is nice, but it is not a god.
There is only one God and we cannot see this God we worship.
A doll is not living. God is living. God is the God of the living. One day some people, who believed that when you died that was all there is to life, came to Jesus with a trick question. They wanted to know about a woman who married a man and then he died. This woman then married another man. He also died. She did this again and again. "Whose wife will the woman be," they asked Jesus, "when she and her husbands are in heaven together?"
Jesus says that heaven is not like this earth. Things are different in heaven. But one thing is for sure: God is the God of the living. We will live in heaven, but it will be different!
Since none of us has been to heaven to see what it is like, we can only trust in what Jesus says and know that our living God will take good care of us -- in this life and in heaven. I'm glad we have a living God!
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for taking care of me in this life and for taking care of me even when I die. Amen.
