A glass of water, please
Children's sermon
Object:
a cup of cold water
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a cup of cold water
with me this morning. This cup will help me tell you about this
morning's lesson. First, I want to tell you the story of a little
girl, about your age. She attended Sunday school and church, just
like you do. During church often she would hear things that she
didn't understand. She heard big words and beautiful music about
how to be a follower of Jesus. She liked going to church and
Sunday school. But, sometimes she didn't know how she could do
things that Jesus asked. These were things like helping people
who were in need, telling people about God, and visiting the
sick. Have you ever felt like that girl? Do you sometimes wonder
if you can ever serve Jesus? (Let them answer.) I thought so.
Everyone in church this morning was a child like you once. When
we were your age, we, too, wondered how we could serve Jesus. In
fact, even adults sometimes wonder how we can serve Jesus.
In this morning's lesson Jesus helps answer that question. He tells us how we can serve him. In the church there are many kinds of people. There are great preachers, great teachers, and people who spent their lives doing good for others. All of those people will receive rewards for what they do. We can't all be great preachers, helpers or teachers. But there is one thing we can do. Jesus says it is very simple. He used this glass of water as an example. When we simply help a follower of Jesus, we help Jesus. That can mean that when we help someone in our church, by being kind to them, we help Jesus. He said even if you give someone who follows me a cup of cold water, you will receive a reward from God for what you've done. Your own kindness to others is like this glass of water. Jesus wants us to be kind. When we are kind to others, we are helping Jesus.
