Given, not earned
Children's sermon
Object:
a large, impossible maze drawn on poster board. At the entrance, draw a figure of a person. At the end, draw a heart.
(Hold up the maze) Look at what I've got here. It's a big maze, with lots of tangled paths and dead ends. Up here (point) I have drawn a person. At the other end I have drawn a heart. The heart stands for the love of God. This picture will help us understand what we have to do to find God's love. Let's say that this person is me, and I'm trying to find God's love. How do I get to the end? How do I get God's love? (see what the children think) I can go all around this maze, but none of these paths lead me straight to God. What should I do?
The truth is, this maze is impossible. There's nothing you can do to find God's love on your own. It can't be earned, you can't buy it, you can't get it by following the rules and doing the right thing. The Bible says that we are heirs of God's heavenly kingdom. Because we are his children, we can share in all the gifts he has to offer -- especially his love. Those gifts don't belong to you because you do something special; his love is yours because he has given it to you.
One of our verses today says that God's promise to us rests on grace. It's an undeserved gift. In order to claim the gift, we must have faith and trust. We must believe in God's love for us and claim it as our own. (hold up your sign again and point to the person) So, here I am trying to get to God's love. (trace a diagonal line with your finger over the drawing and down to the heart) God has made it so easy to accept his love that all I have to do is reach out and get it. You cannot ever earn the love, but it's already yours to receive. It's a gift!
Prayer: Father, we cannot ever earn your love, but you give it to us anyway. Thank you for loving us so very much. Amen.
