The gift of God
Children's sermon
Object:
a wrapped birthday present
Good morning! I'm sure all of you have gone to a birthday
party. When you go to a party, you take a gift wrapped like this
(show the present) for the person whose birthday is being
celebrated. A lot of things happen at birthday parties, but at
some point it is time to open the presents. As the presents are
given, the person getting the presents pays the person who
brought the present and then opens it. (Pause) Is that what
happens? Does the person who gets the gift pay the person who
brought it? (Let them answer.) No, of course not! When we receive
a gift, we don't pay for it. That's why it's called a gift. It's
free and we pay nothing for it.
Now God has a gift that He wants to give to every person in
the world. He wants to give everyone the free gift of eternal
life with Him in heaven. Actually, God has already given the gift
when He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross 2,000 years ago.
When Jesus did that, he paid for the sins of everyone in the
world. If you believe that Jesus did that, you have already
received God's free gift. Do all of you believe in Jesus? (Let
them answer.) Well, that's good. All who believe have this
wonderful gift.
The problem is that most of the people in the world don't
believe in Jesus, and therefore, they don't have the gift. Even
some people who do believe in Jesus don't understand that God has
this free gift for them. They think they can get into Heaven by
doing a lot of good deeds. If we had to do stuff to get into
Heaven, it wouldn't be a gift, would it? It would be like the
person at the birthday party paying everyone for his gifts.
Let's thank God for this gift now.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for the free gift of eternal
life in Heaven that You give to all who believe in Your Son
Jesus, our friend and Savior. Amen.
