Focus On The Arrow
Children's sermon
Object:
A white board with a dot and arrow drawn on it.
The first words that are in our Bible reading today are, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God." When your heart is upset, does it feel like the whole world is falling apart? But this picture on my white board can help us understand more what the real truth is.
You see this dot represents our life now and the arrow lets us understand what eternity will be like. It will go on and on just like this arrow. But so often we allow our hearts to be greatly disturbed and upset and yet it is such a small amount of time that we have our problems in comparison with eternity.
But God wants us to focus on the arrow, the eternity that goes on and on. He tells us in John 14:2, "In my Father's house are many rooms... I am going to prepare a place for you."
Heaven is going to be like this arrow. It will go on and on. Yet we get so upset over the little dot now. But how can we know that when we die we will be sure to get to be with Jesus forever? The friends of Jesus asked the same question. Do you want to know what Jesus told them?
He said, "I am the way, I am the truth and I am the life." He didn't leave us wondering without any directions. But made it very clear and he also said, "The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather it is the Father living in me."
Wow! The God of the universe making it very clear how we can have that arrow time with him forever.
How do we apply this to our lives?
Write down on a piece of paper a problem that you are upset about and draw a circle around it to remind yourself that it is just like a dot of time. But then draw an arrow beside it to encourage yourself that your Heavenly Father is preparing a house with many rooms and an eternity with him. Keep your troubles in perspective. So much more is in store. The best is yet to come!
