Fix by Forgiving
Children's sermon
Object:
a broken toy
The Point: We forgive because Jesus forgives us.
The Lesson: Good morning, children. Thank you for sharing this special time in worship with me.
This morning I brought with me a special toy. (show toy to children) It was my grandson's favorite toy. As you can see it is broken. My grandson was sad. He had a friend over to play yesterday. They were playing together when his friend took his toy to play with but then it broke. His friend didn't mean to break it. My grandson was mad at his friend for breaking his toy. How would you feel if your toy was broken by your friend? (get responses) But then he did something very important. He didn't remain mad at his friend. He told him that he forgave him. Then he came and asked if I could fix his broken toy. Now catch this: They went on playing together. They remained good friends.
This morning in our lesson we heard Peter ask how often we need to forgive someone who has done something that has hurt us. Peter was thinking that maybe seven times would be enough. But Jesus said, "No, 77 times!" Jesus was telling Peter that we must always be forgiving. Then Jesus reminded Peter that our heavenly Father has already forgiven us and will continue to forgive us. Because God loves and forgives you and me, we can continue to be a part of his family.
This afternoon I am going to fix my grandson's favorite toy. When I return it to him I going to tell him how special it was that he forgave his friend. I will also tell him how much Jesus and I love him.
Closing Prayer: Children, let us unite our hearts in prayer to Jesus who is always willing to forgive us. Lord Jesus, we know that sometimes we fail to be the kind of children you want us to be. Forgive us always so that we can know your amazing mercy and constant love. And empower us to always be forgiving and loving too. Amen.
