Finding Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of the wise men
Good evening! Why are we in church on a Thursday evening?
(Let them answer.) Tonight we are celebrating Epiphany. Epiphany
is a big word, but it just means that something is being
revealed. In the Gospel reading we heard about how the wise men
found Jesus in Bethlehem. It was revealed to them that he was
born in Judea and they followed a star to find him there. Here is
a picture of them when they found Jesus and gave him gifts. (Show
the picture.)
Now, it is still very important for people in the world to
find Jesus, or perhaps I should say for Jesus to find them. It
has been revealed to us, as it was to the wise men, that Jesus is
the Christ, the Savior of the world. We need to make sure that
everyone has this epiphany, that everyone knows who Jesus is and
all that he has done for us. What can you and I do to reveal this
wonderful news to other people? (Let them answer.) Yes, those are
good ideas. As we begin a new year, I think we should all make
sure that we do all that we can this year to spread the good news
about Jesus. Will you all promise to do this? Will you try to see
that people who don't know about Jesus find out about him? (Let
them answer.) Let's ask Jesus to help us.
Dear Jesus: We know that you want all the people of the world to
know about you and all that you have done for them. Help us to be
people who reveal you to others. Amen.
