Fear Turns to Faith in Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
An umbrella
The Point: In the midst of storms let your fear become faith in Jesus.
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys. Thank you for sharing this time with me.
This morning I brought with me an umbrella. If you saw me carrying my umbrella, what would think is going to happen? It is going to rain. You are right. When it is raining outside, an umbrella can help you stay dry. Storms are no fun, but an umbrella can be a shelter and comfort.
In our reading from Mark, we heard about the disciples and Jesus being caught in a storm. They are in a boat on the sea of Galilee when a storm catches them. I suppose an umbrella might have given them some shelter from the rain but not the wind. Their boat was being bounced about by the storm. The disciples became afraid that the boat would sink and they would drown. In fear they woke Jesus up. Mark tells us that Jesus got up and told the wind and the waves to stop. Do you know what happened then? That is right. The wind stopped and the waves became calm. Jesus is much better than an umbrella. He is the King of creation and our Lord and Savior.
When storms come into your life, you don't have to be afraid or worry. There is a way that your fear can be changed into faith. Tell Jesus you need him in your life and then trust him to care for you.
Umbrellas will help to keep you dry when it is raining out. But Jesus will turn your fear into faith and will keep your life secure in his love. So look to Jesus when there is a storm in your life.
Prayer: Let us hold hands as we unite our hearts in prayer. Jesus, storms come into our lives. Sometimes an umbrella can help. Sometimes the storms cause us to fear. When we are fearful, Lord, send your Holy Spirit to remind us to look to you, our Savior. Change our fear to faith. Lord, bless these your children and keep them and all of us safe in the midst of the storms of life. Amen.
