Dying Of Thirst
Children's sermon
Object:
Crackers or potato chips and a large clear glass of ice water
We are going to go back in time for our story today. But before we do so let's have a snack of some crackers. (Pass out crackers -- have the glass of ice water in view for children to see.) Our story is about a lady that had a chance to meet Jesus in person one day as she was doing her daily chores. Jesus was very ordinary and like us in that he was tired from a long trip and was thirsty.
Do you want some more crackers?
Are you thirsty?
Jesus asked the lady in our story if she wanted water but not just any water, he told her it was living water. You see my cold glass of ice water. It looks pretty wonderful when you are so thirsty after so many crackers! But Jesus had even more spectacular water he wanted to give to this lady if she would receive it.
My water satisfies for right now. However, tomorrow we get thirsty again. Jesus said his water would make people never be thirsty again. Just as this large, cold, glass of water satisfies our terrible thirst, it is the same way that Jesus can quench the thirsty heart of a person's heart.
If I told you that you couldn't have this large glass of ice cold water when you were so thirsty, that would be mean of me, even cruel!
Are we willing to share about this wonderful living water that people are so desperately needing to know about?
How do we apply this to our lives?
Jesus refreshes and satisfies our souls like nothing else can. Are we content to just drink for ourselves or do we see how thirsty our friends and relatives are and offer them Jesus as the living water? You wouldn't want to make your friends die of thirst but is that what we do when we don't share about Jesus the living water?
(Give children bottles of water that have a label written on it that says "Life Water.")
