Doing good
Children's sermon
Object:
a red cape (a red towel would do)
You have heard about bullfights, haven't you? The bullfighter
waves a red cape in front of the bull and tries to make the bull
angry (wave the cape). The bullfighter hurts the bull to get the
bull angry. I don't think bullfights are nice. Neither do I think
it's nice what people sometimes do to each other. Sometimes
people do everything they can to get another person angry. The
word we often use is the word "provoke" -- such as "she provoked
him to get him angry."
Jesus was provoked by those around him. They spit on him and made fun of him and hurt him. They tried to make him angry. But what did Jesus do instead of getting angry? (Let them answer.) He prayed for those who provoked him. He still loved those who did bad things to him. Jesus used the bad done to him to do good to others!
The writer to the Hebrews encourages us to provoke one another -- not to get angry, but to provoke one another to do good. What a challenge that is! It's hard enough to get ourselves to do good. How much harder to get others to do good!
It's comforting to know that if Jesus could do good when others did such bad to him, we can surely do good to others as well. Could that be why this is called "Good" Friday?
Dear Jesus: People did bad things to you and yet you loved them. Teach us to love all people. Amen.
