Dancing Angels
Children's sermon
Object:
Photo of lost pet that is found, and/or classic painting of Jesus holding a lamb
“Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (v. 10)
Good morning girls and boys,
I am so happy to see you this morning I could just about burst! Know why? You are here with your ears on, and I have some exciting stories to put into your ears and into your hearts!
First of all, how many of you have pets? What do you have? (children respond)
Are you aware that sometimes a pet, a puppy or a kitty gets lost?
Have you had a pet get lost? (children respond) It is very, very sad.
Sometimes you see posters with a photo of a dog or a kitty who is lost. Some lost pets that are found are taken to animal shelters and people adopt them. That is a wonderful thing to do.
People get lost too. People drift far, far away from God and need to be found.
Jesus told two stories to the grumbling Pharisees and scribes about why he made friends with tax collectors and sinners. The first story was about a lost lamb. Out of 100 sheep, what does the shepherd do? He leaves the 99 and searches until he finds the lost lamb.
In a second story, there is a woman who has ten coins and loses one. What does she do? She lights a lamp, sweeps, and searches the house until she finds the lost coin.
Jesus is saying, “Quit grumbling Scribes and Pharisees. I, Jesus, came to find lost people.”
When a lost lamb is found, everybody is happy. When a lost coin is found, everybody laughs. When a lost pet is found, tears of sadness turn into tears of joy. When a lost person is found, there is jubilant joy in heaven!! Can you imagine the angels in heaven doing the polka? Dancing for joy? Singing and praising God? That happens whenever Jesus finds a lost child or a lost mom, lost dad, or lost friend. Joy! Joy!
Do you children have a story of something lost that was found? (children share)
Prayer: Like lost lambs, coins, pets, and people you found us, Jesus. You found us first in our baptism. Thank you, Jesus. Watch us now as we too, dance with the angels. Amen.
