Children's sermon
Object:
A branch, and an apple or banana
“I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.” (v. 5)
Hello boys and girls,
Welcome to worship today. Thanks for joining me. I have a special children's message for you this morning (and for adults too).
If you could be a fruit today or any day, what fruit would you choose to be? A strawberry? A blueberry? Pear? Apple? Banana? And why would you be what you just said? Delicious taste? Lovely color? Nice to touch? (children offer their selections and reasons)
I would like to be a ____________ because ___________________.
The Bible tells about special kinds of fruit. None that you eat, but all that you and I can produce and live. They are called the fruits of the spirit. There are at least nine of them. Some of the fruits of the spirit are:
The fruits of love, joy, and peace and the fruits of faithfulness, goodness, gentleness, patience, self-control, and kindness.
Jesus told his followers that he was like the trunk of the tree. His followers-- you and I are the branches. We can only bear fruit when connected to the main trunk.
See this branch. It is cut off. Can it bear any fruit? (children answer)
When a branch is connected to the trunk it gets water, nourishment and life.
So it is. You and I, connected to Jesus in our baptism, produce spiritual fruit. We produce love, joy, and peace. Jesus' life is in us.
So boys and girls, whenever you practice love, joy and peace it shows you are connected to Jesus.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, trunk of the tree, help us as live branches connected to you, to
produce spiritual fruit like love, joy and peace. Amen.
