Baby Jesus from a manger scene
Good morning (or good evening), boys and girls. What did I
bring with me? (Show the baby Jesus figurine and let them
answer.) This is baby Jesus from the manger scene in our church
(or, from my home). How many of you have manger scenes in your
home? How many of you like to play with all the figures in your
scene? (Let them answer.) Let's list all of the people and
animals in the manger scene. Of course, there is Jesus. Who else
is in the manger scene? (Let them answer. As you get answers ask
if the child can tell the part played by each figure.)
(Here are figurines in the manger and answers you may use:)
Mary is the mother of Jesus.
Joseph is Mary's husband.
The angel told the shepherds to go to Bethlehem and find Jesus.
The shepherds were in the fields. The angel told the shepherds to go find Jesus.
The wise men followed the star to find Jesus. Actually the wise men didn't arrive on Christmas Eve. They came a little later. We will talk more about them on a Sunday soon.
Everyone of the people you mentioned had a very important role to play in the story of the birth of Jesus. But, the most important person in this story is Jesus.
Christmas/Christmas Eve is one of the most important days in the life of the Church. It is Jesus' birthday.
Our lesson tells the story of Jesus' birth. It tells about Mary and Joseph finding a place to stay for the night. It tells about the shepherds in the fields. It tells about the angel telling the shepherds to go to Bethlehem. It tells about the shepherds going to Bethlehem and finding the baby with Joseph and Mary.
The next time you look at a manger scene, look at all the figurines. Remember all the people and the part that they played in the story of Jesus' birth. Remember that the most important one in the story is Jesus. Jesus was the savior that the angel told the shepherds about. Jesus is our savior. That's the good news of Christmas. Jesus came to save us. Jesus is our Messiah.
