Changes
Children's sermon
Object:
pairs of walking shoes, tennis shoes, golf shoes (or other
shoes)
Indeed they cannot die any more, because they are like angels and are children
of God, being children of the resurrection. (v. 36)
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I brought some different kinds of shoes. I thought we might talk about the times we change our shoes. I notice that you have on your Sunday shoes. These are usually shoes we wear only once in a while. When we go home today, we will change into our play shoes, like these. (show them a pair of walking shoes) If I go somewhere to play tennis, I will change my shoes again and wear tennis shoes. (show them the tennis shoes) I might play golf and if I did I would use my golf shoes. (show them the golf shoes) There are all kinds of different shoes. We have some for work, some to play in, and a different pair to go dancing. Almost everyday you have to change your shoes several times.
Change is good and there are a lot of changes that are going to happen in your life. You may change houses, cars, schools, gasoline stations, the kind of milk you drink, and many other things. We are a people of change.
A long time ago there were men who wondered about the changes that happened to people after they died. These people were asking questions when they talked with Jesus. Jesus knew what happened but he tried to get the people to think about living a new life with God. This is a great life but there is something much better when we are joined to God in his new world. It was hard for some people to understand the changes. We will always be with God and God will always be with us.
Jesus told the people that were asking to think about their new lives as if we will be like angels. We will be able to do things that we never thought about. We will be a part of a new world, and we will live everyday with God. I think it will be beautiful. I think we will think differently and act differently, but I am not sure how I will think or act. It is a mystery. It will be a wonderful surprise. I do believe that it will be a big change from living in this world.
Think about how much fun it is to change shoes and how many times we do it. We love the change. We like to work, go to church, be in the garden, and learn to dance, play a game of basketball or baseball, and even wear flippers when we swim. Change, change, change! We will be changed people, and we are going to love every minute of it. Jesus promised it and therefore it must be true. Amen.
