Caring for Others and Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
quilt or item that is given to someone in need
The Point: To care for others is to care for Jesus
The Lesson: Good morning, girls and boys! Thank you for sharing this time with me. This morning I have brought a quilt. Every Wednesday morning the women of our church gather to make quilts. They start with old shirts, pants, and blankets that are cut up into squares. They sew them into the front of the quilts. Can you see them in this quilt? (let children answer) They certainly make a beautiful quilt, don't they? (let children answer) However, look closely and you'll see that one square is not as pretty as all the rest. But with all the different squares, you have a pattern that is truly beautiful.
This quilt and many others will be packed and sent to a country where people are in great need. They will be given this quilt and the others as well. The quilt will be used to keep them warm at night and during the day it will be used to shade from the sun or placed on the ground to sit upon. All the work of quilting ladies will be a special gift to someone in need. It's that which is truly beautiful.
From our reading in Matthew today, Jesus said that when we do something to help meet a need someone has, we are helping Jesus. When we care for another person, we are caring for Jesus. Jesus said that because he loves all people. Jesus wants everyone to know that they are loved. When we meet someone's need we are telling them that they are cared for and are important to Jesus.
I invite you this week to find a way to help meet someone's need. Ask Mom or Dad to help find a way. And remember when helping and caring for some else, you will be doing it to Jesus. And you know what? You will then become a part of a human quilt of caring for others.
Closing Prayer: Jesus, you saw our great need for forgiveness and saving and you came and met it. Now you invite us to meet the needs of others so that they might come to know you too. Jesus, meet the needs of our children even as we help them to be a part of our community of outreach. Jesus to love you is to love others. Amen.
