Bread from heaven
Children's sermon
Object:
bread in a basket and a note in an offering basket
We all know what bread is. We eat bread all the time. One day
Jesus talked about bread but it was a different kind of bread.
The bread he spoke of was bread "from heaven." He was really
speaking of himself.
Today we gather to give thanks to God. Most of us will give thanks to God for all the food we have to eat. When my tummy growls, I know it is hungry and I'm so glad God gives me food to fill my growling tummy. So I will give thanks today for food.
Today's reading tells about people who were thankful to Jesus for giving them bread to eat when they were hungry. We are also thankful for bread. We are glad that we get something to eat when we are hungry.
There are other things that make me hungry in different ways. When I want to know about God, my mind is hungry. God feeds my mind with stories about Jesus. When I get angry and hurt someone else, I get hungry for forgiveness. Jesus gives me forgiveness. When I get sad because someone I love is not near me, I get hungry for friendship. Jesus is the best friend any of us has.
So today I will give thanks not only for the food I will eat, but especially for Jesus. We cannot see Jesus, just as you cannot see what is written on that note in the offering basket. You see I am thankful today for the bread I eat. But I am thankful about some things no one can see. Let's see what I have written on my note: (Read the note which says) "Dear God, thank you for Jesus!"
I thank God for bread that I can eat and for Jesus, too. Dear God: Thank you for Jesus. Amen.
