Believing
Children's sermon
Object:
a gavel, a wrench, a bridal veil
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not
seen. (v. 1)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what you want to be when you grow up? (let them answer) That is wonderful. I hope every one of you becomes the person that you want to be. I brought along a few things that my friends wanted to be when they grew up. Do you know what this is? (hold up the gavel) That's right, it is a gavel. I had a friend who wanted to be a judge. He always talked about being a judge. Do you know what he was when he grew up? (let them answer) He was an airplane pilot.
I had another friend who always wanted to work on a racing car. He had sets of tools when he was a boy. What do you think he did when he grew up? (let them answer) He was a baker that made bread and cakes and pies.
Tell me what this is. (hold up the bridal veil) It is a bridal veil. All of her life my friend wanted to be a bride and walk down the aisle. What do you think happened to my friend? (let them answer) She was a bride and she was beautiful.
When we grow up we want to have faith in God, strong faith that makes us disciples of Jesus. To have that kind of faith we need to start now while we are little and hope that we will be one of God's heroes. Faith comes to us when we learn how to pray. Faith comes when we learn to forgive. Faith comes to us when we learn how to share our things with others. Faith is a wonderful gift that God gives to people when they believe in him and trust him. Faith is not something that you can see but instead it is trusting in God to lead us every day of our lives.
When you are not near your mother or dad do you still feel something very special about them? If they are at home and you are in school do you feel their love? Are you sure that they will love you all of your life? When you grow up and have your own family do you think there will still be enough love in your heart for your mother and father? (let them answer) Of course there will be more than enough love. No matter how big your family gets, you will still love your mom and dad.
That's the way it is with faith. It just keeps growing. It is like love. You can't see it or smell it or listen to it but you know that it is there. Faith is what God gives us to believe in him and in his word for as long as we live. It is true that you can't see it but it may be the biggest thing you ever have in your whole life. Amen.
