Being a Christian
Children's sermon
Object:
small crosses that can be handed out to the children; also a cereal box and symbols of organizations, like school logos or perhaps a Boy Scout or Brownie pin
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is the first Sunday in September and what a wonderful day it is for us to celebrate. School has started (or is almost ready to start) and we all feel just a little more grown up.
I brought along some symbols that I am sure you will recognize. First, let me show you this one. (hold up a cereal box and let them tell you what is in it) That's right, Cheerios. What do you do with Cheerios? That's right; you eat them.
I also have some pins or badges that boys and girls wear. (show them the organization pins) Do you know who wears these pins? That's right, a Boy Scout (or Brownie, etc.) wears this pin.
Let's try this one. Whenever I go past this school I see something that looks like this. (show a school logo) What does the symbol mean? That's right; it means that anyone who wears a jacket or shirt with this on it goes to [Name] School (or is the parent of someone who does).
Well, I have one more I want to show you. There are several in this building. I see people wear them around their necks and on their clothes. What is this? (show them a little cross) That's right; it is a cross. What does the cross mean? (let them answer) That's right; it means that Jesus died for our sins on a cross.
Why do people wear crosses? Are they going to die on a cross? I don't think so. Do they wear them because they are pretty and made out of gold or silver? Maybe some people do. But that is not the main reason. The real reason should be that they want people to know they are Christians.
Paul tells us in his letter to the people Rome what a Christian is. Paul said, Christians show love to one another; they do good to each other. They try to be helpful and are very enthusiastic. Christians are people who live in hope, are patient when they hurt, and do not complain, and they love to talk with God in prayer. Christians are generous to each other and share what they have with strangers. Christians don't brag or think they are better than other people. They help the poor and make them their friends. Christians listen to others. Christians live in peace and do not try to get even.
Prayer: Help us to be good Christians and to follow Jesus. Amen.
