Are you ready for Christmas?
Children's sermon
Object:
a notebook and a pencil
Good morning! Today is the tenth of December. Who can tell
me how many days it is until Christmas? (Let them answer.) Yes,
in fifteen more days, it will be Christmas Day. Are you all ready
for Christmas? (Let them answer.) Let's make a list of some of
the things we need to do to get ready for Christmas. I have a
notepad here. What are some things we need to do before Christmas
comes? (Let them answer, and list whatever they bring up, such as
buying presents, wrapping, and so forth.)
There is one thing that really needs to be on this list.
Whose birthday is it that we celebrate on Christmas? (Let them
answer.) Yes, it's the birthday of Jesus. Now, do we need to buy
a present for Jesus and wrap it up? (Let them answer.) No, Jesus
doesn't want us to buy anything for him. We give presents to each
other instead of buying one for him. But if we are really going
to be ready for Christmas, we need to remember that it is his
birthday and prepare the way for him, just as John the Baptist
did when he told people to get ready for him. What are some
things we could do to be sure we remember whose birthday we
celebrate at Christmas? (Let them answer, and suggest ideas about
honoring Jesus that we should be doing at Christmas.)
Let's thank God for sending His Son Jesus into the world to
save us all from our sins.
Dear Father in Heaven: As we prepare for Christmas, please help
us remember that it is the birthday of Jesus that we are
celebrating. We thank and praise You for sending him into the
world on that first Christmas. Amen.
