Angels are God's messengers
Children's sermon
Object:
a ceramic angel and a ceramic person
Good morning, boys and girls. Christmas Day may be over, but the Christmas season is still here. The baby Jesus is with us now and, just like the shepherds did, we thank God for his presence. Everyone was so happy when Jesus was born. Mary and Joseph were thrilled. The shepherds were excited to go to the stable and see the child of God. But sometimes we ask ourselves, "Why did he come?" Does anyone know why Jesus was born? (let them answer)
It is not an easy question. Did he come to make us smarter? (let them answer) Did he come to make us healthier? (let them answer) Did he come to check on us and see if we are going to Sunday school and church? (let them answer)
Maybe Jesus came for another reason. I brought along a beautiful gift that I received from some friends. (hold up the angel) Do you know what this represents? (let them answer) That's right, an angel! Angels were an important part of the Christmas story. They visited with Mary and Joseph and the father of John the Baptist. There were angels with the shepherds and they sang beautifully. So who are the angels? (let them answer) The Bible teaches us that they are God's ministers and messengers. They are not people, but they are part of God's creation, just like we are part of God's creation. Do you think Jesus came to help the angels? (let them answer) I don't think Jesus came to help the angels.
Then why did Jesus come? Who did Jesus come to help? (let them answer) The Bible teaches us that Jesus came to help people. People like you and me. (hold up the ceramic person) Jesus came to make us stronger in faith and love. Jesus is the one who teaches us, heals us, forgives us, and makes us children of God. Jesus came to take away our sin and replace it with the kind of love that allows us to do things that we couldn't do before. Jesus gives us courage to tell the truth. Jesus helps us share our best things with people who have very little. Jesus teaches us to pray for our enemies that they might be safe and learn to love.
The next time you see a picture or a statue of an angel, remember that angels are God's ministers and that they deliver messages from God to people. But when you see a person, any person, remember that Jesus came into the world to help people. Jesus was not born to help angels. Jesus was born to help you and me. Jesus is our Savior.
