It's a well-known fact that membership of the Church of England and of other churches in England has declined dramatically over recent years. It's perhaps less well known that membership of almost all organisations has also declined dramatically over recent years, from the children's organisations of Scouts and Guides through local organisations like the WI or Round Table to national organisations like membership of political parties. The numbers of those who regularly attend football matches is down, and many theatres are now fighting for survival.
