Your Lifetime Teeth
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: a baby tooth or a drawing of a baby tooth
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have lost some of your teeth, your baby teeth? (let them answer) Almost all of you, and some day every one of you will lose the teeth that you have had since you were babies. Then what happens? (let them answer) That's right; you get new teeth with big roots that will last all of your life. Teeth are very important to us because they help us to eat the correct kind of foods that we need to grow. They also make us look good when we smile. We all kid each other when we lose our front baby teeth. Does anyone here this morning have a big space up front when they smile because they are missing their two front teeth? (look for a good example of missing front teeth and let them show off a big smile) Some day you will have some beautiful new teeth to take up that empty place in your lovely mouth.
There is a reason why we have talked about your baby teeth and about losing them. I want you to think about something that Paul talked about a long time ago. Many of you will remember that the Israelites were God's chosen people. That meant that God chose the Israelites to be the messengers of his teachings. If God wanted the world to know about what was right or wrong, he told the Israelites and they told the rest of the world. That is how God worked out the teaching of the Ten Commandments. It was a fine system and the Israelites liked being the chosen people.
But then things got mixed up. Instead of listening to what God taught, some of the leaders began to make up their own rules that they thought would be a help to God. Soon they were making more rules than God was making. They stopped listening and before long they lost their place with God. They lost their closeness with God, just like you will lose your baby teeth. Things are really different when you lose your teeth. It is hard to eat corn on the cob and other good food. You must do things differently.
But Paul did not want anyone to think that God had given up on the Israelites. He said that they would come back again because the Israelites belonged to God, for they were especially chosen. Some day things would be the same again with God and the chosen people. That is like knowing that you will have your lifetime teeth some day. Of course the sooner the better, but you just have to wait until that time comes. You can't hurry it.
So the Israelites will be taken care of by God just like you will some day have your new teeth, but only God knows when that time will come. Always remember: Never stop listening to God, and never start making up your own rules and calling them God's rules.
