Call To Worship
By whatever name we call God, God is there. God is listening and speaking into our silences. God is waiting and ready during our shouting. God is present as we sigh.
Collect
Holy God, we praise your name. Holy God, we call to you. Holy God, we wait for you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Sometimes, God, happenings jolt us out of any assumption that we are in control of our life. They shake out of us any last piece of confidence, any final chip of arrogance. Having no one higher to blame in our earthquake, we end up shouting to you, "What are you doing, God?" Then, startled, we begin to listen to your questions. Forgive our conceit. Amen.
59B Hymns
"Holy God, We Praise [Thy][Your] Name" Tune: GROSSER GOTT, WIR LOBEN DICH
"By Whatever Name We Call You" Tune: OGONTZ
"God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN
Proper 24
Sunday between October 16 and October 22 inclusive
Second Lesson: Hebrews 5:1-10
Theme: Called Forever
Call To Worship
God calls us to take seriously our jobs, work, and professions even in times of low job security. When we greet our work with an attitude that anticipates high quality and satisfaction of purpose, an integrity surrounds us that has little to do with length of time or amount of money.
Collect
You offer to your people, O God, the sustenance of having a purpose and a sense of meaning. You bring us energy of spirit for accomplishing our daily tasks despite weaknesses and frailties. We give you thanks for your bolstering support. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We are told, God, that we are better people for our suffering. Suffering makes us stronger. Suffering hones us to use our energy only on what is of greatest importance. We are not certain that we believe these words, God. Teach us how to persevere and to trust in the nearness of your Spirit in carrying out the work to which you call us. Amen.
59B Hymns
"Holy, Holy, Holy" Tune: NICAEA
"Trust And Obey" Tune: TRUST AND OBEY
"O For A Heart To Praise My God" Tune: RICHMOND
Proper 24
Sunday between October 16 and October 22 inclusive
Gospel: Mark 10:35-45
Theme: We Are Able, But
Call To Worship
Leader: Are you able to live out the promises of being a Christian? We say that we are able.
People: The question is, will we choose to live as Christians amid the school sports events, television and internet, the job competition, the list of pressing other things?
Leader: Are you able to live out the promises of being a Christian? We say that we are able.
People: We are able, but --.
Collect
You, O Strength, who offers guidance for our hands, our feet, our thoughts, our heart, guide our intentions toward being the best people we can be according to what you teach us through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Do you know, God, that just because we seem too busy to take time to live as Christians, that does not mean we no longer respect the teachings of our faith? Help us to reconcile our hearts so we do not give up on ourselves altogether and stop trying to practice our faith. We hear your voice calling as we harvest our talents. Help us want to turn a listening ear to you. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
59B Hymns
"[Ye][You] Servants Of God" Tune: HANOVER
"Guide My Feet" Tune: GUIDE MY FEET
"Jesus Calls Us, O'er The Tumult" Tune: GALILEE or "Hark, The Voice Of Jesus Calling" Tune: GALILEAN
