Where do words come from? When you say something, where do you get the words? (Children respond. Repeat their answers, encourage further responses, and add to their list if necessary.) Someone said words come from our mouths, and our tongues. Somebody said words come from dictionaries, typewriters, and computers. I heard someone say words come from books. I also heard that words come from our brain. Those are all good answers, but there is one other place words come from that I want us to think about this morning. Did you ever stop to think that words come from our hearts?
Sounds kind of strange, doesn't it, words coming from our hearts? Hearts don't have lips. Hearts can't talk; they don't speak to us. But in many ways, our hearts are responsible for everything we say.
The Bible teaches us that the things we say come from what's in our hearts. The words we use and the things we say tell others a lot about us. If we are full of bitter, hateful talk, then our hearts are probably full of bitterness and hatred. If we use harsh, mean, and ugly words all the time, that's most likely what's in our hearts. If we speak kind and gentle words, our hearts are likely full of kindness and gentleness, and if we use words that show love and caring, we probably have hearts that are filled with love and care for other people.
What kind of talk comes out of your mouth and what does it say about you? Remember, the Bible teaches that the words that come out of our mouths actually tell others what is in our hearts.
Listen to yourself this week. Listen to what you are saying. Make sure your words come from a clean, pure heart. God bless you.
