Pastor:
Commitment to the Christian faith is a way of life, not just knowledge of God's laws.
People:
Many of Jesus' day knew how to look righteous without being righteous.
Pastor:
Jesus condemned them for their hypocrisy, and called his followers into a life of humility and service.
People:
May the devotion we feel for God in our hearts direct us to live in the beauty of holiness.
Collect
Gracious Father, who has made righteousness a way of life rather than a ritual of appearance: Create in us new hearts which will make us sincere in our expressions of faith, that our lives may demonstrate with honesty the profession of our lips. We pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Forgive us, Father, for our desire to look more righteous than we are. We learn so easily how to act as Christians, and we find ourselves acting instead of living. Cleanse us of all false piety, and fill us with your Spirit to live genuine Christian lives. Hear us for Jesus' sake. Amen.
Hymns
"Breathe on Me, Breath of God"
"God Who Touchest Earth with Beauty"
"I Would Be True"
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
PROPER 27
Sunday between November 6 and 12 inclusive
First Lesson: Amos 5:18-24
Theme:
Call for righteousness and justice
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God requires of the human race a social system of equal rights for all people.
People:
Many of our brothers and sisters are wronged because of prejudice or politics or poverty.
Pastor:
For these, the Church is called to be the Lord's prophetic voice: Justice and righteousness are God's will to which the human race must bow.
People:
We pray for a Church to speak this word clearly; a world to hear it favorably; and a society to enjoy it peacefully.
Collect
Almighty God, who looks with displeasure on a world of social injustice: Enable your Church to be an effective servant on behalf of those who are abused by the injustice of others; that our world may move into the era of unity and peace. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
The world cries, Father, and we do not hear it, because we are singing our favorite hymns too loudly in praise for our own blessings. Forgive us when we do not hear or see or cry with those who are treated less than brothers or sisters. Guide us in a ministry that will speak on behalf of those not heard; and bring equality to those who are despised. Hear us for Jesus' sake. Amen.
Hymns
"At Length There Dawns the Glorious Day"
"God Send Us Men"
"We Bear the Strain of Earthly Care"
"Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life"
