Ants Work Best Together
31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
ant farm
Scripture: Matthew 6:19-20
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Material: ant farm
Look at this, boys and girls. I brought the ant farm again, and what do you think? Our friend ants have been working and working. Even though they are very small, these ants have moved one grain of sand after another until they have built up quite a little city here. Look how much sand they have piled up at the top of their little anthills. I can see tunnels and rooms and ... look! They are storing all kinds of food down in those tunnels!
Who can tell me what ants might want to store in their tunnels? (look into the ant farm every now and then to keep pulling the children's attention back to it as you discuss what ants might store in the tunnels; as an added object, you could have samples of the foods you have been feeding the ants, such as seeds, bread crumbs, or bits of cracker) I think we can all learn a lesson from the ants. They tell us it is important to store things up.
What about you, boys and girls? If you had a secret tunnel, what would you store in it? (allow more discussion, but try to get the word "treasure")
But you know what? God tells us to store things in a special way. He says we should be storing up our treasures in heaven, and the kind of treasure you can store in heaven is the good things you do while you are here on this earth. So pray and read your Bible. Be kind to others and give. These are the treasures that can be stored in heaven, and that is better than any secret tunnel!
