Trading

Object:
A large candy bar, a Cheerio, a two-liter bottle of soda, and a small paper cup.
Message: Do you ever trade things with your friends? When I was growing up we used to trade stuff all the time, trying to get something we thought was better than what we had. We would trade baseball, football, and basketball cards with each other during the seasons for those sports. We would trade desserts at lunch time at school. Sometimes we would even trade some toys we were tired of for something that our friends were also willing to trade. The key in good trading is to get something you want, or something that seems to be worth more than what you have.
Today I brought some examples of things we might want to trade with each other. Let's say you went to the store and bought this big candy bar. You had saved up your money and this is the type of candy bar you really like the most. Then I come along with a bag of Cheerios that I have been eating and when there is only one Cheerio left in the bag, I say to you, "Let's trade. I'll give you this Cheerio and you give me that candy bar!" Would that be a good trade? Not for you! You would never make that kind of trade!
Let's try another one. What if you have been to the store and bought this big bottle of soda. It is about 90 degrees outside and you just can't wait to get home and enjoy it. Then I come along with this little glass of water and say to you, "I'll give you this cup of water if you will give me that bottle of soda!" Would you do it? Nobody I know would make that kind of trade!
However, the Bible tells us that is exactly the kind of trade Jesus made when He came to earth. From before the beginning of time He was filled with the power and fullness of God, enjoying the praise of all the angels of heaven every single day; yet He traded that to become a human being and die for our sins on Calvary. Jesus gave up what He had so that we could know how great the love of God really is.
