There are many special days in a year and today is one of those days. Who knows what today is? (Children respond.) Today is Father's Day. We take time today to thank our fathers for all they do. I know some boys and girls don't have fathers; that might make you feel sad today, but if you don't have a father, you can thank someone who is like a father to you. This morning, I want to tell you a story about my father.
This is a true story that happened when I was a little girl. My family was camping in the mountains and we decided to go on a hike. This hike started out at the top of a mountain and wound around and around down the mountainside. It was a long way down, but going down wasn't so bad. As a little girl, however, I didn't remember that if I went all the way down, I would have to climb all the way back up.
Once we reached the bottom, we were near the foot of a tremendous waterfall. Boy, was it magnificent! The water crashed down and exploded all over us. We could feel the cool spray on our faces. It was quite a sight but I was tired after that long hike down and I really didn't care about waterfalls. After a while, my dad said it was time to head back to the top. Back to the top? Did Daddy expect me to hike back up that mountain? I couldn't do it! I knew I'd never make it! I was too tired to climb a mountain! I was just a little kid!
Sobbing and feeling sorry for myself, I took a few steps, but I really was too tired and too little to complete such a steep climb. I didn't have the strength. Finally, I plopped down in the middle of the path, put my head down on my chest, and cried. My dad could have gotten angry. He could have said if I was big enough to hike down then I was big enough to hike up. But instead, he came and picked me up. He carried me until I was rested and able to climb on my own.
My Dad didn't know it back then, and neither did I, but he taught me a lesson about God that day. He taught me that we get ourselves into places that we can't get out of, and that sometimes we are too weak to go on, but during those times, God picks us up, carries us, and lets us rest until we are strong enough to continue.
I learned a lot from my parents. Today, Father's Day, let's be sure to say, "Thanks, Dad." Remember to let your dad know how much you love him and appreciate him. God bless you.
