Object:
a fresh fragrant rose
Purpose: To stress the importance of taking time to appreciate what God has given to us in his created world.
Material: If possible, have a fresh fragrant rose on hand.
Special Procedure: This object lesson should be used when the weather is pleasant outside.
Lesson: Each Sunday, as we gather for worship, we have flowers at the front of the sanctuary, as you can see this morning. They are very pretty and remind us of the wonder of God's creation. (At home, you can call attention to a flower garden.)
Most of the time what many people do is just look at the flowers; and that is fine. But now and then, we find a flower -- like the rose -- that offers us more than just a beautiful sight. Do you know what else a rose offers? ... (Let them smell the flower.) ... A beautiful fragrance.
Sometimes we become so busy that we do not take time to enjoy the things we have around us. This morning we all came to church. Since it is a beautiful morning, we all should have stopped for a moment and inhaled the nice fresh air. Or we should have looked at the beautiful blue sky, or stopped for a moment to listen to the birds sing.
When you get home today after church and sit down for your meal at lunch, I hope you will take time to enjoy the
meal and not just eat it as fast as you can because you have something else you want to do.
Sometimes we get so busy in life that we do not even take time to breathe deeply, and that is a shame. Let's do that right now. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. (Ask everyone to do it.) Isn't life wonderful?
