Pastoral Prayers For All Seasons
Object:
One of the limitations your creation places upon us, O God, is time. We cannot make it slow down or speed up; it moves inexorably at its own pace. We enter it at one point and we shall leave it at another. We have no ability to alter or change its character.
The only segment of time we know is the past, which we'll never experience again. We are always looking toward tomorrow, and yet we shall never enter it. The one segment of time that we consciously experience is the present moment -- now. It is the only section of time upon which we can bring our influence to bear. All other time is beyond our grasp.
Help us to use our past as a teacher. May our reflection upon it grant us wisdom for the present moment. Help us to set aside the temptation to immerse ourselves in what might have been -- or to plunge into the morbid game of "if only."
Grant us the spirit of faith and hope in anticipating tomorrow. Remind us that there is much more to life than waiting for the next event. Sometimes we think, "As soon as I see the doctor," "As soon as Labor Day weekend is past," "As soon as we get a new car," "As soon as my spouse apologizes to me," then -- and only then -- will life begin again. However, we cannot wait to live until then.
Therefore, grant us the courage to live now -- today. Help us to grasp this moment -- the only segment of time available to us -- and use it for the eternal values of faith, hope, and love. Today we speak. Today we listen. Today we act. Today we live.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
