The Seed

Story Time At The Altar
86 Messages For Children
There once was a seed and in that seed was life. The seed was buried in the earth. In the dark, wet ground it waited. It waited and waited. At the right time, the seed burst through its shell to search for the sun. In order to grow, the seed needed the sun. But something held it within the ground. If the seed could have seen up above, it would have seen a heavy, moss-covered log lying on its birthplace. The seed could not live without light from the sun. But the log prevented it from growing tall and straight. The seed, feeling life within, searched for another way to find the light.
One day a little girl cried, "Look! A leaf!" Her mother came and saw the log. She pushed aside the log to see the crumpled daffodil, twisted and bent, hugging the ground. Now, without the log covering it, the daffodil grew, for all life needs light and food and love.
Talk together: What did the story say to you? What is your favorite story in the Bible? What is your favorite story?
If you are using these stories in a church school setting, plant seeds and watch them grow.
Think of a "seed" in your life, something just beginning, be it your trust in God, a relationship with a new friend, a hobby, or a new idea.
Think of the seed of growth of life. Imagine Jesus giving out seeds. He turns, smiles, and gives one to you, saying, "Now go with God and plant your seed." You decide where to plant your seed and watch it grow. As it grows what does it represent to you in your life right now? What stage is it in? Talk with your seed. See it in full bloom.
Draw your seed in whatever image you see it and its growth.
Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for seed and growth, for rain and sunshine, and especially for your love. Amen.
