The Right Side

Matthew To Revelation
Object: things with two sides but only one of them is usable, such as a dinner plate, an umbrella, or a coat
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever heard that there are two sides to every story? (let them answer) A lot of people say this. I remember the time when some people were very unhappy with Paul and they wanted him to be put in jail and kept there. The story is in the Bible. People were upset with Paul because they thought he was teaching about another God. Paul told them he was true to the same God as they were only he had new information. They didn't want any new information, so they began to tell lies about the way Paul acted. They told the governor who was like a judge that Paul was causing problems. They tried to take a story and make a different side of it.
Let me show you what I mean. I brought along a few things that we have all seen. For instance, I brought this plate. How many of you use a plate when you eat? (let them answer) Good, everyone uses a plate. When you use your plate, which side do you use? (let them answer) Good, that is the same side I use. But the people who wanted to make trouble were the kind of people who used the other side of the plate. (show them what you mean by turning the plate over and putting some kind of food on the wrong side) That doesn't work, does it? The food will keep falling off of the plate.
Or how about this? (show them an umbrella) Which way do you hold the umbrella when it rains? (hand it to a child and let them hold up the umbrella) Very good, but the kind of people who were accusing Paul would hold the umbrella upside down. What would happen if you held the umbrella upside down? (let them answer) Very good, the rain would fill up the umbrella and soon you would be very wet.
Let's do one more. I brought along a coat. Which side of the coat would you use? (let them answer) Very good! You would wear the coat with the tag inside and not outside. Wearing a coat inside out would look really funny. The people who wanted Paul to be in prison were the kind of people who would wear the coat inside out.
Paul did not cause trouble and he told the truth about Jesus. He taught people about the God of love and joy. Jesus died for our sins. God forgives us and promises us a new life.
But there are people who do not love God and want people like you and me to say ugly things about God. We are talking about the same God only we see it from two different sides.
Remember the right ways to use your dinner plate and your umbrella and to wear your jacket. And remember Paul was right when he taught about Jesus Christ as new information about the same God. We believe in Jesus like Paul did and we want to share the news about Jesus with everyone.
